'Kinky Boots' to be shown at Circle forum

by Rev. Allen V. Harris

Cleveland-November's Widening the Circle Forum at Franklin Circle Christian Church will be the movie Kinky Boots with a discussion. This British PG-13 film explores tradition, change and transformation, and the power of taking a chance on supporting those who are different, diverse, and even marginalized.

In the film, inspired by a true story, Charlie Price is a Londoner who is stuck with his dad's failing shoe company when his father passes away. Charlie is inspired by a local drag queen named Lola and starts a sassy

new line of "kinky boots" in an effort to save the company. The results are as hilarious as they are poignant. [A Chronicle review of the film is at www.gaypeopleschronicle .com/stories06/april/0421066.htm.]

There is no charge, and there will be light refreshments. The movie and discussion will last just about two hours and there will be a brief time for discussion following. Childcare will gladly be provided, however you must call ahead by at least 24 hours so that we can make arrangements.

Kinky Boots and the discussion will be

Thursday, November 17 at 7 p.m. at the church, 1688 Fulton Rd. near West 28th St. in Ohio City.

Widening the Circle Forums are part of the larger dialogue in the congregation and community about diversity, hospitality, and inclusiveness. For more information, go to www.franklincirclechurch.org/ Widening The CircleForums.htm.

Rev. Allen V. Harris is the pastor of Franklin Circle Christian Church, a Disciples of Christ congregation.

Kent show benefits scholarship fund

by Bryan Guffey

Kent-Blue: Stepped On is a night of drag, dance and musical performances illustrating the experience of gay, bisexual and progressive men as they traverse the collegiate experience—their highs, lows, and everything in between.

On November 12, the Local Alumni Association of Delta Lambda Phi Social Fraternity will be hosting the show, featuring dance, drag and theatrics at 7 pm at the Kent Stage, 175 East Main St. in Kent. Doors will open at 6 pm, cocktails will be available, and there will also be a silent auction.

Blue: Stepped On is a touching, powerful and sometimes whimsical reminder of what we all experienced at one time, as we struggled to figure out ourselves and our place in the world. It will feature performances by Mary-Kate Rockefeller, Athena Ghost, Nova Jay-Jay, Lady Diamante and

more.

All proceeds will benefit the Academic Scholarship Fund, which will provide financial assistance to students who are unable to afford college due to issues surrounding their sexual orientation, whether that be lack of parental support, religious objections, costs for health concerns, etc. Preference in this scholarship will be given to initiated brothers of the Alpha Psi Chap-

Delta Lambda Phi is the nation's oldest and largest fraternity for gay, bisexual and progressive men, aiming to provide both a safe and positive environment for these young men to grow and develop into the leaders of tomorrow. The fraternity's motto is "Make your presence make a difference.” Brothers of Delta Lambda Phi are committed to making their communities and the world a better place for all regardless of age, race, nationality, sex, gender, or sexual orientation. The Alpha Psi chapter has been on Kent State University's campus for over a decade.

For the past 25 years, Delta Lambda Phi has provided a safe, positive and welcoming environment, endeavoring to afford its members the opportunities afforded to all other college students: an identity, a place to call home, and people to count on. This year, the Alpha Psi Chapter Local Alumni Association is bringing a final piece to that puzzle: financial assistance to those who may not have the ability to support themselves through college.

In a nation whose economy is stressed, where jobs are scarce, and discrimination and bigotry are still too often the norm, it can be hard for most youth to find the money

?

to attend college. For LGBT youth, who are too often cut off from financial assistance from parents and family, it can be even harder. Studies show that students who have to work during school have worse grades and do not form social bonds as strong as their counterparts who are able to focus wholly on their schoolwork. The Local Alumni Association is attempting to change the pattern of LGBT students working fulltime during school, having to drop out to save money to continue school, or having to enter the workforce without a college degree.

As members of the LGBT community, this issue affects us all, and the fraternity welcomes your support and promotion of this philanthropic endeavor. Furthermore, it's going to be an awesome time! If you can't attend, there are many ways to support the scholarship fund.

Tickets can be purchased online at http:/ /goo.gl/pav4n, as well as sponsorships or donations. Student IDs will be required at the door for student tickets. Buy your tickets soon, because they will sell out.

Brian Guffey is the vice president and programming director of the Alpha Psi Chapter Local Alumni Association of Delta Lambda Phi.
